Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
VITA is a federal program providing free tax preparation for low-to-moderate-income individuals, disabled people, older Americans, and limited-English speakers. Income limit: $64,000.
GetYourRefund.org
GetYourRefund.org offers virtual VITA services for those who can’t get in-person help. Qualify if you earn under $66,000. Available in Spanish and can help with past years' taxes too.
TCE offers free tax help focusing on pension and retirement issues for people 60 and older. Some AARP sites also help low-to-moderate-income filers in their 50s.
MilTax
MilTax provides free tax services for military members, families, and certain veterans. Available from the start of tax season through October. No income requirement.
Direct File
Direct File was tested by the IRS in 2024 for simple returns. Initially limited to residents of 12 states, it’s now available to all eligible taxpayers in those states.
